A BBC Radio 2 host has quit her beloved show after 14 years of it being on air.

Liza Tarbuck has decided she “wants her weekends back” and has revealed tonight that she is stepping down from her Saturday evening show on the airwaves.

The comedian and actress usually hosts the 6pm to 8pm slot each Saturday evening on Radio 2, which she has hosted since 2012.

Posting on Instagram, Liza said: “We made 2 hrs of radio feel like a private members club, that’s the stuff of dreams.

“Thousands of people enjoyed each other’s company like great friends…

“Thank you for letting me in, it’s been a privilege.”

Helen Thomas, the head of of released a statement after the news of Liza stepping down came to light.

Helen said: “Every Saturday evening, Liza created a truly magical, fantastical world.

“She was beloved by everyone at the station and all her listeners, and the door at Radio 2 will always be open for her.

“Liza will be hugely missed and we wish her the very best of luck for the future.”

Shaun Keaveny will present the slot until the end of March.

Liza shared the news on her Instagram page, which sparked a mass influx of fans pleading that she stay on air.

“If Liza really is leaving… can BBC Sounds PLEASE make all her shows available to listen to forever??!!! I fear it’s the only way to cope moving forward…” penned one person.

Someone else joked: “This should be discussed in Parliament. It’s a national disaster.”

A third penned: “No no no no no… this is not good news. I love your radio program. I love the community. It speaks to my soul, makes me cry and laugh out loud in good measure.

“Sometimes I even cook to it. Live, and many many many many many many replays. I agree with everyone on here this is very sad news indeed.”

And a fourth said: “Nooooooo!!!!! You were the only DJ I tuned into R2 for!!! Please pop up somewhere else xxx.”
