PETER Mandelson put off flying home from the US because of his pet dog, documents reveal.

Emails from show the Foreign Office agreed to push back the Labour grandee’s departure after so he could secure “veterinary certification” for 10-year-old border collie Jock.

He eventually agreed to leave the in DC on September 18 last year.

He then flew out on September 24.

But Mandelson also insisted officials ensured he was met with “maximum dignity” back home.

He said: “My chief concern is leaving the US and arriving in the UK with the maximum dignity and minimum media intrusion which I think is to the advantage of all concerned.

“Not least because I remain a crown/civil servant and expect to be treated as such.

“How is the FCDO assisting in this?”

HR chiefs at the Foreign Office ordered daily “welfare checks” on the peer in response.

In a goodbye email to staff, also signed off with a farewell from Jock.

In the note, he told officials in the : “Thank you from me, and Jock.

“I will treasure the experience and memory of having worked with you all.”
