Atiku, Obi presidency: PDP chieftain kicks against coalition

Published on May 20, 2025 at 09:12 AM

Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, has expressed opposition to the talks about the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, entering into coalition with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

Udenwa claimed that the issue of coalition would not arise if the PDP, which is the leading opposition party, is not in a present crisis.

The remark comes amid reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had offered Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party the vice-presidential slot in a proposed single-term coalition ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show programme on Tuesday, the former Governor stated that coalition can only work to some extent if PDP continues to be in in the dilemma it has found itself.

He said: “The PDP which is the leading opposition party is in a present crisis it finds itself. As soon as this crisis is over, I believe it will be over. The issue of coalition will not arise.

“But even if PDP continues to be in in the dilemma he finds himself today, I believe coalition can then work to some extent, because right now, APC has performed so poorly that Nigerians are looking for an alternative, and if that alternative is a coalition, so be it.

“I, in my own mind, as a person, I don’t believe that the coalition is the best option. The best option is PDP rediscovering itself, being a leading opposition party and other parties can coalesce into it, can now come and join PDP or cooperate with PDP under the platform of the party PDP.

“That is what I think will work. Ideally, not just a coalition, where people bring their personal ambitions and all that.”;;
