The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has appointed an interim leadership for its Adamawa State chapter, pledging to prevent Nigeria from transitioning into a one-party state.

On Saturday, the ADC announced that it aims not only to serve as a viable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but also to seize power from them by 2027.

During their inauguration in Yola, the newly appointed leaders of the ADC expressed that the long-standing opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has gradually lost its influence and ceded too much ground to the ruling APC, making it essential for the ADC to take the initiative.

Babachir Lawal, the ADC National Vice Chairman for the North East and chair of the Adamawa leadership inauguration, stated that the ADC is poised to take over power in 2027, citing the APC's loss of credibility.

“The APC has turned into a refuge for individuals fleeing from the EFCC,” Babachir remarked, adding, “Nigerians understand the reasons for their exodus and will reject them.”

Senator Ishaku Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Zone in the National Assembly from 2019 to 2023, also addressed the gathering. He noted that the ADC, widely accepted by prominent opposition figures, would maintain its growing momentum as the preferred party until it surpasses the ruling APC.

Abbo emphasized, “We are the opposition force preventing the emergence of a one-party system,” asserting that the ADC, as a party for the youth, has a significant pool of young individuals to propel it towards success.

Another ADC leader, Senator Abdulazeez Nyako, who served in the Senate from 2015 to 2019 for Adamawa Central and was the ADC's gubernatorial candidate in 2019, stated that the ADC will focus on fairness for all, ensuring it can produce widely accepted candidates at all levels for maximum impact in 2027.

Babachir, Bindow, Abbo, Nyako, and several others form part of the extensive Adamawa State Steering Committee inaugurated during the event.

The new interim leadership is chaired by Sadiq Dasin, a former speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, the new interim chairman explained that this leadership was necessary due to the inability of two factional leaders within the ADC in the state to reconcile their differences and provide harmonious leadership for the party.

He committed to ensuring a fair playing field for everyone as the race towards the 2027 general elections gains momentum.
