Mr Yusuf denied Reform’s plans would mean pulling bobbies off the beat to protect politicians in Britain.

He also told The Sun: “I want to reiterate this is a place where we do need to spend .

“I do not want to see another politician, regardless of party, or former politician, murdered.”

Mr Yusuf claimed attacks on politicians as “racists” and “Nazis” were fuelling threats against them.

But he defended some of his spikier language after he previously accused Conservative politicians as “traitors” while calling some of his opponents “sick”.

Mr Yusuf said: “If you use the word traitor, for example, the definition of traitor is somebody who is engaged in betrayal.

“As far as I’m concerned it is demonstrable that the has acted in betrayal of the people who voted for them.”
