Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has officially inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II appointed as chairman, alongside the Emirs of Gaya, Karaye, and Rano as members.

This announcement was made in a statement released on Monday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The ceremony followed the governor’s approval of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which dissolved the five emirates established by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

During the inauguration at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, Governor Yusuf stated that this initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the traditional institution in fostering peace, stability, and development within the state.

He characterized the traditional institution as a cornerstone of history, a guardian of the community's values, a custodian of heritage, a catalyst for social stability, and a vital partner in governance.

“The inauguration of the Council of Emirs today reaffirms our administration’s commitment to preserving Kano’s cultural legacy, enhancing good governance, and strengthening the collaboration between the Government and the Emirates,” he remarked.

The governor further noted that the Council is expected to act as a central platform where traditional leaders can "convene, discuss, and provide significant advice on issues that impact the welfare of our people."

Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo expressed optimism that the Council will significantly contribute to the overall development of Kano.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Professor Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, delivered a presentation discussing the history of the Kano Emirate and its ties with the Rano, Gaya, and Karaye emirates.

He highlighted that the governor had reinstated a 700-year-old structure where the Emir of Kano serves as the leader of the unified emirate system.

In his comments, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II described the reestablishment of the Council as timely and in line with historical precedents.

He commended Governor Yusuf for what he termed unprecedented and monumental achievements, reaffirming the emirates' commitment to contributing positively to the advancement of Kano.
