The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the federal government to honor university autonomy and cease the enforcement of policies that compromise academic freedom.

In a statement made in Calabar, ASUU's zonal coordinator for the Calabar zone, Comrade Ikechukwu Igwenyi, claimed that numerous policies have been imposed that hinder the smooth progress of academic activities.

He demanded the immediate release of their outstanding salaries for three and a half months, all withheld salaries, reimbursement of all third-party deductions, and payment of all promotion arrears.

ASUU also called for the disbursement of the outstanding 25-35% wage award with consequential adjustments, sufficient budgetary allocations for education, and sustainable funding for Nigerian universities.

“We demand the completion of renegotiation and full implementation of agreements with specific timelines, along with fair compensation and improved working conditions for academic staff to prevent the loss of talent,” ASUU stated.

Igwenyi, along with nine other members, further stated, “We have given the government a four-week ultimatum to resolve these issues, warning that we will not hesitate to initiate industrial action if our demands are not fulfilled.”

“We will remain steadfast in our commitment to undertake industrial action, resolute and unwavering in this just struggle if our demands are not met.”
