Now, at 38, he is set to face James Hurrell for a spot in the quarter-finals and has his eyes on the £1 million prize.

He stated: “We played a few games this week. I would say I’m slightly better than Luke at Call of Duty. I need to catch up on the rest.

“Luke’s a different kind of player. Clearly, the two Lukes are the benchmarks that everyone is trying to reach, and that’s the level we all aim for.

“I would need to perform like I did today to come close to them, and that’s something I’m working on.”

Searle has always maintained a relaxed demeanor but acknowledges that he is eager to win the title and the substantial cash prize.

He added: “If you can’t get excited about playing for a million pounds, then you probably shouldn’t be in the game, right?

“I mentioned earlier in the Matchplay that the World Championship was my main focus due to the significant prize money.

“So, it’s great that things have gone according to plan because sometimes you can say that and then end up losing in the first round. I’ve done well so far.”

Searle expressed his desire to compete against his practice partner Gary Anderson in the final showdown on January 3.

He remarked: “Yeah, we’d split the winnings! That would be a fantastic final. The last time I played Gary was in the Pro Tour final.

“We faced each other twice back to back. I think that was one of our last encounters.

“So, yes, that would be great, and considering how he’s playing, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it to the final.”
