American rapper Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., commonly known as T.I., has shared his reasons for not attending church, despite identifying as a Christian.
The Atlanta star mentioned that he was brought up in a Christian environment and firmly believes in the “realness” of God; however, he perceives the church as a business.
In a recent interview with gospel artist Kirk Franklin, T.I. accused some Christian leaders of “twisting” the Bible and taking advantage of their congregations.
“I have never been a church person. I grew up in a devout Christian household. My grandmother and aunt were deeply committed to prayer. So, I understand how to pray and know the scriptures. I know God is real; I’ve experienced His presence and influence in my life. Yet, I have never felt a connection with the church,” he stated.
“Honestly, I don’t believe the church is genuine. I see it as a business. It resembles a performance, akin to public speaking or a TED talk. Sometimes, the clergy attempt to distort the word of God for their own gain.”
T.I. also expressed that he does not think he needs to pay tithes or make any financial contributions to a church for God to bless him.
“You’re telling me I have to pay this person for my God to hear my prayers? No way, I’m out of here,” the rapper remarked.
He further emphasized that he believes there should not be a middleman, such as a clergy member, in his relationship with God.
