The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of being a persistent source of provocation in the political landscape, claiming that he stirs up trouble to conceal his self-serving motives.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, made this statement in a release issued on Monday, responding to Wike’s media interaction with selected journalists in Port Harcourt, which also took place on Monday.
According to the PDP, statements made by the minister on various occasions demonstrate that he exemplifies anti-democratic behavior.
The party emphasized that Wike's actions are not unprecedented, noting that he has consistently behaved as an agent provocateur in the political sphere, inciting controversy to further his own interests.
The PDP further remarked that since Wike took office as Governor of Rivers State in 2015, he has been a frequent source of discord within the party's leadership.
“From the Sheriff era, where he was a leading figure in the movement to support Sheriff as National Chairman, he later turned against him to advocate for Sheriff’s removal. Subsequently, he promoted the Uche Secondus-for-National Chairman movement (in fact, he gave a highly controversial interview that divided the party just before the convention) and later fought to oust Secondus.
“The same Wike spearheaded the initiative to appoint Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman despite the advice of numerous party leaders, and shortly thereafter, Wike was again at the forefront of the movement to remove Ayu.
“In his end-of-year media chat, Minister Nyesom Wike reiterated his support for, and even declared himself the ‘number one supporter’ of the presumed candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 Presidential election, while still being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. This confirms the grounds for his expulsion from the PDP due to anti-party activities,” the statement concluded.
