A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has welcomed President Donald Trump's initiative to halt the relocation of individuals from developing countries to the United States.
Trump recently announced that his administration will “permanently pause” immigration from all so-called Third World nations, including Nigeria. He shared this information in a statement on his Truth Social account late on Thanksgiving Day.
Trump stated that this action aims to allow the U.S. immigration system to “recover” while reversing what he referred to as “millions of illegal admissions under Joe Biden.” He also pledged to remove anyone residing in the U.S. who is not a “net asset” or is “incapable of loving” the country.
According to data from the World Population Review, over 60 nations across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific—including Nigeria—are classified as Third World countries based on their human capital rankings.
In a post on X, Shehu Sani praised this decision, emphasizing that immigrants should remain in their home countries and work to develop them.
“President Trump’s decision to prevent Nigerians and citizens from other Third World countries from relocating to the U.S. is a positive development,” he wrote.
“Immigrants should stay in their own countries and address their challenges or learn to coexist with them. It is better to remain than to be pursued, hunted, and deported by ICE.”
In a related update, the Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on Thursday that he has initiated a review of all green cards previously granted to individuals from countries deemed “of concern,” in accordance with Trump’s directive.
