We are investigating claims that woman died in our hospital due to negligence – ATBUTH

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has commenced an internal investigation following allegations that a woman died due to negligence by medical staff at its Renal Centre.

The incident gained public attention after a Facebook post by Ibrahim Katagum accused hospital staff of abandoning his mother mid-dialysis, leading to her tragic death. Katagum alleged that a nurse left the patient unattended while she was still connected to a dialysis machine, during which a vital tube became dislodged, causing her blood to spill on the floor.

“I found the nurse outside chatting while our mother was left tied to the blood filter. Her blood drained onto the floor after the tube detached,”;; Katagum wrote in Hausa. He added that the attending doctors were reportedly shocked at her sudden death, considering the condition she had been left in.

In response, ATBUTH’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Usman Koli, expressed condolences to the grieving family and confirmed that a full investigation was underway to uncover the truth behind the incident.

“We are committed to getting to the root of the matter and will take every necessary step to address any failings and ensure this never happens again,”;; Koli stated in a Facebook post.

He also advised members of the public to report complaints through the hospital’s official channels rather than relying solely on social media, which he said may not always provide balanced or accurate representations of events.
