WAYNE ROONEY was once earning £17 million a year during his prime at Manchester United – a revelation that left his former teammates astonished.

The iconic England striker holds the record as United’s all-time top scorer with 253 goals and is considered one of the greatest players in Premier League history.

Rooney shared on the The Overlap podcast that he earned over £300,000 per week after signing a five-and-a-half year contract in 2014.

This agreement, signed when Rooney was approaching 29, also encompassed commercial rights and ambassadorial duties beyond his playing career.

Neville asked: “You might not want to answer this, but you might want to take it out even if you do answer it, what would your biggest contract have been at United?”

“Because I’m your teammate in 2010/11, I’m on £1.75 million [per year], I’m captain…”

Rooney, now 40, replied: “Biggest? Probably about £17 million a year.”

Neville was left speechless and, with a slight smile, replied: “I think I should have been paid a little bit more!”

Pointing at Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford, Neville added: “That’s incredible, congratulations… Well done, Paul.”

Rooney, whose prior £250,000-a-week contract was about to expire, had been on the verge of leaving the previous summer after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed he had requested a transfer.

Former right-back Neville earned a base salary of £1.75 million, which increased to £2.25 million, a stark contrast to what his former teammate would eventually earn.

He mentioned: “[Money] was never a priority for me. I never once concerned myself with the financial aspect. I simply thought that if I could finish my career at 35 or 36 at United, then I would be fine.

“When they offered me seven years at a lower salary, it was more beneficial for me than signing for four years at a higher salary. I always took a more cautious approach.”

Carragher disclosed that his largest contract was worth around £3 million, with most of his earnings coming from performance bonuses following Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League victory.

Keane , on the other hand, stated he earned approximately £5 million at his peak, significantly surpassing Neville’s earnings because he considered himself a “better player, obviously.”
