Blunder VAR who allowed controversial Erling Haaland goal vs Man Utd DROPPED by Premier League

BLUNDER VAR Matt Donohue has paid the price for the Old Trafford shocker by being dumped from this weekend’s Prem fixtures.

Pro Ref bosses made a public apology barely three hours after the final whistle of when Donohue incorrectly ruled ’s goal should stand despite a clear offside offence by .

And now Donohue and his assistant Blake Anthrobus have been left off the appointments list for the final weekend before the international break.

A Pro Ref spokesman said: “Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus have not received appointments this weekend following the Manchester Derby on Sunday.

“The decision made by Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb and the management team comes as the latest match official appointments are released, meaning the VAR and AVAR respectively from the Manchester United v Manchester City fixture will not officiate until at least after the international break.”

Former schoolteacher Donohue, understood to be a Tottenham fan from Essex but who moved to Manchester for his university studies a decade ago and still lives in the city, was contacted by Webb within minutes of the final whistle, with an explanation sought for his mistake.

Shortly after 9pm on Sunday evening, Pro Ref published “clarification” of the incident.

A spokesman said: “The VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.

“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place.”

While it is accepted that this was a case of human error, Webb recognised that action was required.

Prem bosses believe the proactive response by Webb helped to cauterise the wound although there is an expectation that the “review” will be swift and make clear and strong recommendations to avoid any repetition.

Sun Sport understands the League is not planning to make any representations to Webb and Pro Ref, believing that taking “ownership” of the error was an important and public step.

But it means Donohue and Anthrobus will not be involved in match duties until at least October 11.
