A MAJOR UK mobile network has expanded its free speed upgrade to more than 1.2 million Brits.

Mobile operator Virgin Media O2 is now available in across 33 large towns, 48 smaller towns and 194 rural villages.

As the network continues to upgrade its service, customers in the county will notice a boost to their 5G mobile connection.

The move should mean faster, more reliable.

In a statement, Professor Robert Joyce, director of mobile access engineering at O2, said the upgrade in Surrey would create new opportunities “in and around the county”.

He added: “We are investing every single day to improve our mobile network and provide a more reliable experience for our customers, futureproofing our connectivity and paving the way for exciting innovations that lie ahead.”

It’s all thanks to a technology called 5G standalone, which is a higher performing version of 5G that better handles congestion on the network.

This can also unlock big benefits for autonomous transport, remote healthcare and fully robotic factories.

At the moment, a lot of the 5G in use across all networks is actually non-standalone, which is some 4G tech mixed in with 5G upgrades.

This means connections aren’t at their full speed potential.

In all locations now with 5G Standalone, Virgin Media O2 claims it has at least 90 per cent outdoor coverage ensuring that customers looking to benefit from the technology receive a reliable and consistent experience.

The operator’s rollout across Surrey includes locations such as Dorking, Epsom, Guildford, Haslemere, Redhill, Reigate, Staines and Weybridge.
