German Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Miguel Berger, has described US President Donald Trump's tariffs as the biggest assault on global trade since the Second World War.

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday morning, Berger also outlined the EU's next steps amid Trump's tariffs.

Recall that Trump had on Wednesday announced a 20% tariff on European Union countries like Germany and France, in his bid to dismantle the global trading system.

Speaking on the development, Berger said: “We could laugh about it [Trump's tariffs] but it's devastating.

“It's the biggest assault we have seen since the end of the Second World War on global trade, and we will all have to find a way to deal with it.”

He added, “We might hear a little bit more [on Monday], but we want to give negotiations some more time.”
