Troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have recovered a significant cache of high-caliber 12.7mm ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri.
This recovery was the result of ongoing intelligence-led security operations and subsequent actions following recent cordon-and-search activities aimed at restricting the movements of criminal and terrorist elements.
Confirming the incident, the Media Information Officer for OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, stated that the discovery occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Friday after troops received a distress call from community members who observed suspicious metallic objects in a drainage channel in the vicinity.
“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, in collaboration with Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, promptly mobilized to the site to secure the area and evaluate the situation,” Uba remarked.
He revealed that a comprehensive search of the drainage channel resulted in the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including several live 12.7mm rounds, as well as power banks hidden within the drainage.
According to him, initial measures were put in place to secure the site, while efforts continued to drain water from the channel to ascertain whether any additional hazardous items were concealed in the area.
“Troops, in collaboration with the police and other security agencies, have maintained a strong presence in the area to ensure the safety of residents, protect critical infrastructure, and prevent any attempts by criminal or terrorist elements to retrieve the items,” he stated.
Uba noted that there were no casualties or unusual incidents reported during the operation, emphasizing that the overall security situation in the area remained stable, although vigilance was necessary due to the unpredictable nature of the threats present.
He stated that the successful recovery highlighted the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations, sustained military pressure, and community cooperation, particularly in light of recent efforts that neutralized or apprehended several suspected suicide bombers.
The OPHK spokesperson encouraged the public to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious items or activities to security agencies, stressing that collective responsibility is essential for maintaining peace and security in the North-East.
