The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, officials said.

Images from the scene show the vehicle thrown onto its side just metres from the tracks.

Emergency workers can be seen clambering over the upturned base of the train as others assess the scene.

Among the injured, a woman from Bashkortostan and a man from the Chelyabinsk region suffered fractures.

They were rushed to hospital along with 15 other victims in need of urgent treatment.

Four children were also hospitalised and currently remain under observation, Governor Alexei Russkikh reported.

They suffered no serious injuries, “only abrasions and bruises,” Russkikh assured.

The rest received outpatient care, he added.

A team of Ulyanovsk taekwondo athletes aged between 12 and 14 were travelling on the ill-fated train on their way to a competition in Ufa.
