A former presidential adviser, Bashir Ahmad, has urged Nigerians to view the Tinubu/Shettima ticket as a collaboration between two ethnic groups – Yoruba and Kanuri – that symbolizes national diversity.

In a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, Ahmad encouraged Nigerians to set aside religious sentiments and refrain from perceiving the ticket solely as a Muslim/Muslim pairing.

He emphasized that for the nation to progress, citizens should steer clear of politics driven by bitterness, asserting that Nigeria deserves better.

“I genuinely don’t know where this will ultimately lead us as a nation. If the escalating tensions and the ongoing reckless narrative stem solely from the combination of the individuals currently in the Presidency, then why can’t we simply wait and express our dissatisfaction through the ballot boxes in 2027?

“We all vividly recall the events surrounding the 2023 elections. Neither President Tinubu, his Deputy, nor the APC based their campaign on religion. They did not visit mosques spreading religious fear, nor did they exploit faith for political advantage.

“I truly believed that the Tinubu/Shettima ticket would be perceived primarily as a Yoruba/Kanuri alliance, two ethnic groups uniting to embody national diversity, as many have advocated that religion should never take precedence over ethnicity. Yet now, because that narrative does not align with the current agenda, everything is suddenly reduced to Muslim/Muslim, while their ethnic identities appear to be disregarded.

“If we genuinely care about this country, our political discourse must be guided by truth rather than reckless narratives designed to provoke sentiment. Nigeria deserves better,” he stated.
