President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to provide security for Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the nation.
A statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, indicated that from now on, police authorities will redeploy these officers to focus on their primary policing responsibilities.
This presidential directive was announced during a security meeting that President Tinubu held on Sunday with the chiefs of police, Air Force, Army, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services in Abuja.
As per the new directive, VIPs requiring police protection will now need to request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Numerous regions in Nigeria, particularly remote areas, have a limited number of police officers at stations, complicating efforts to protect and serve the populace effectively.
The statement emphasized that, given the current security challenges facing the nation, Tinubu aims to enhance police presence in all communities.
Additionally, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers. The federal government is also working in conjunction with the states to improve police training facilities throughout the country.
Sunday’s meeting included Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
