AUGUST is National Hair Loss Awareness Month – an issue now impacting 15million people in the UK.
Our locks are primarily made of a protein called keratin.
If you’re short on nutrients, those you do have go to more vital parts of your body first, which can affect hair growth and quality.
Tresses need protein, zinc, iron, biotin and omega 3 for health. I tried some supplements that can help . . .
Drink
Perfectil Platinum Collagen Hair has a sweet berry-fruit flavour Credit: supplied
PERFECTIL Platinum Collagen Hair is a supplement combining 7,000mg of marine collagen with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and botanical extracts, which all help to maintain healthy locks.
Collagen provides the protein, while nutrients include biotin, which helps the body make keratin, zinc, selenium, vitamin C and copper. Plus l-cysteine which forms part of keratin.
It has a sweet berry-fruit flavour and a slight aftertaste, but is a bit pricey.
Ten 50ml bottles (one daily), £41.45, vitabiotics.com .
Powder
Collagen Complex from Revive Active contains 200mg of hyaluronic acid, which is known for its ability to attract and retain moisture Credit: supplied
COLLAGEN Complex from Revive Active contains 8,500mg marine collagen peptides plus ten active ingredients for hair, skin and nails.
It also contains biotin to boost keratin, zinc, selenium, copper and vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation and supports natural production of the protein. There are B vitamins and vitamin E, too.
It contains 200mg of hyaluronic acid, which is known for its ability to attract and retain moisture, helping to support skin hydration. I prefer this – a higher dose of collagen and I like being able to add water to the sachet to get a fruity drink.
It has a tropical orange and pineapple flavour – and it is cheaper, too.
£49.95 for a 30-day supply at reviveactive.com .
Tri system
Viridian Tri-Hair System is a three-step programme Credit: supplied
THE Viridian Tri-Hair System is a three-step programme with a supplement, a botanical oil blend and a serum to put on your hair.
The Hair Support Complex capsules (take two daily) contain biotin, zinc, selenium, iron, vitamin C and copper plus a natural chemical called MSM that helps with hair health.
The Organic Hair Growth Liquid is the one you drink (1tsp daily), which contains flaxseed, safflower, pumpkin seed and evening primrose oil, alongside millet extract and rosemary oil. It sounds disgusting, but it’s not bad at all.
Then there’s The Organic Hair Restore Serum (apply 2ml) with pumpkin seed, castor, argan, rosemary and black seed oils to moisturise the scalp.
