THREE teenagers have died after a suspected drunk driver plunged a car into a canal near Milan.

The 19-year-old Italian driver crashed into the Villoresi canal in Senago early this morning.

He is now under for alleged aggravated vehicular homicide.

Shocking footage showed a crane slowly hauling the submerged from the water.

, firefighters and specialist divers rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 5.30am.

Nine people were believed to have been inside the vehicle when it left the road and plunged into the water.

The victims were two boys and a girl – all aged 17.

The boys were found dead inside the wrecked car, while the girl died shortly after being taken to hospital.

The six other occupants, aged between 17 and 19, were also injured in the crash.

Milan prosecutors have ordered autopsies on the three as the investigation continues.

The Deputy Prime Minister of and Minister of Infrastructure and Matteo Salvini wrote on social media: “Three young lives lost, six young people injured.

“Nine people in the same car ended up in a canal, the driver drunk.

“Unacceptable.”

He continued: “The leading cause of death for young people continues to be road accidents, not illness or .

“I want to write directly to the kids, students and new drivers, I want to reach them in their and meet them in .

“Life is sacred and there is only one.

“A prayer and a thought for the families and friends of the victims of these tragic hours.”

This is not the first time someone has lost their life after swerving off the road in Italy.

Last year, after her car crashed, rolled and entered a canal.

Police spotted the vehicle in the water half-hidden among vegetation during a routine patrol.

Firefighters used specialist equipment to reach the car and open it before discovering the body of the 44-year-old victim inside.

After attempts to revive her failed, the woman was pronounced dead and her body was transported to the nearby Institute for Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The scene of the accident took place in the commune of Villa Literno, Caserta, 15 miles northwest of the southern Italian city Naples.
