The Kano State Government’s Special Task Force Committee on Illegal Structures has sealed an alleged illegal plaza construction site at Unguwar Wambai in Gwale Local Government Area, alongside 37 other structures across the state.

The exercise carried out on Tuesday, was led by officials of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), who said the action was taken to prevent further safety risks and violations of building regulations.

Speaking during the operation, the Chairman of the committee and Director General of KANGIS, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, said the sealed site is located in a high-risk and high-tension area that poses danger to residents.

“There cannot be building very close to high tension place. That is why we stopped, sealed, and secured the place immediately,” he said.

He described the construction as illegal, stressing that safety concerns made the government step in immediately.

“This is illegal. How can someone build in a risk zone? This is a danger area, and the government does not want people to play with the lives of Kano residents.

“There should be a restricted zone. At least 50 feet should be left on both sides. If you build here, it will affect people’s lives and even the building itself,” he said.

He warned the owners of the property to stop the construction immediately.

According to him, the government would take legal action if the directive is ignored.

“We are calling on the owner of this structure to stop immediately. It is for their own benefit. If they refuse to comply, the government will take drastic legal action. This will serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.

He also urged residents and developers in Kano to follow planning laws and regulations, noting that compliance would help make the state safer and better organised.

“We want the people of Kano to do the right thing and abide by the laws so that Kano will be a good model,” he added.

The task force also sealed 37 other structures across the Eastern and Western Bypass corridors, including truck parks, ongoing construction sites, and fuel station projects.

The affected sites include Baffa Manager uncompleted building at Eastern Bypass, a two-storey plaza along the bypass, 300-metre row of shops with fencing, Triplex Plaza at Ladanai Layout, and multiple garages and fenced lands among others.
