Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea&#8217;s 1-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday was that his Blues simply weren&#8217;t good enough.
Also, turns out Man City is pretty good.
&#8220;City played a part in this,&#8221; Tuchel said. &#8220;Making you underperform is also a kind of performance.&#8221;

Tuchel had Pep Guardiola&#8217;s number in recent meetings, most notably Chelsea&#8217;s capture of the European Cup last Spring, but City appeared determined to get a measure of vengeance.
&#8220;We lost the game and City deserved to win,&#8221; Tuchel said. &#8220;For 60 minutes we were very very strong, but there were 80 meters where we were not good enough with ball possession, to switch up play, to hurt them, and to grow in confidence.&#8221;
All that said, Tuchel knows he was one deflected shot shy of 0-0.
That won&#8217;t satisfy Chelsea fans who expect their team to push their game on the opposition, especially at home.

&#8220;Until we conceded we defended really well but this is only part of the day,&#8221; Tuchel said. &#8220;We were simply not on our very best level and you need your best level to put a game like this on your side. &#8230; We tried to push and got our crowd behind us. It was an emotional game but never on our highest level and that&#8217;s why you can never expect to get the result.&#8221;
A trip to Juventus is up next for Chelsea, then a Premier League visit from Southampton.

The big injury concern for Chelsea heading into this game was goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. He injured himself against Zenit in the UEFA Champions League and missed the wins against Tottenham and Aston Villa, as Kepa came in and did very well as his back-up. Guardiola has had some big defensive injuries but John Stones is on the bench and Aymeric Laporte starts. Chelsea host Premier League champions Manchester City in a stiff test of the leaders&#8217; title credentials on Saturday as Liverpool and Manchester United bid to keep pace with Thomas Tuchel&#8217;s side.
The Blues look well-equipped to end the season as English champions for the first time since 2017 after signing Romelu Lukaku to add a cutting edge to their attack.
But Liverpool, the 2020 title winners, and Manchester United are matching them, with all three teams locked on 13 points after five games.
No fears for Tuchel&#8217;s BluesEven though the season is still young, former England captain turned TV pundit Alan Shearer predicts Chelsea are going to be difficult to stop.
Tuchel&#8217;s team beat Manchester City three times last season &#8212; including in the Champions League final. 
Since then they have signed Lukaku from Inter Milan and have also been miserly at the back &#8212; conceding just one goal in the league.

&#8220;They won the Champions League in May without him. But his arrival means they don&#8217;t have a weak link in their team, and they have such strength in depth too.&#8221;
It is too soon to call the match at Stamford Bridge a title decider, but City boss Pep Guardiola will not want to leave London six points behind one of his main rivals.
Norwich&#8217;s unwanted record 
Norwich have lost their past 15 Premier League games under Daniel Farke &#8212; the longest losing run by any side in English top-flight history under a single manager.
That horror streak encompasses the end of the 2019/20 season, when the Canaries were relegated to the Championship. They immediately bounced back.
Norwich were given a hideous task on their return to the English top-flight, with their four first matches against Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester and Arsenal before last week&#8217;s loss to Watford.
The Canaries are only three points behind 16th-placed Wolves but must turn their form around soon, with Farke saying their leaky defence is the main problem.

Can Kane reignite Spurs?Harry Kane has endured a slow start to his season for Tottenham after a move to Manchester City failed to materialise and is yet to score in the Premier League.
But Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo believes the England striker is still getting up to speed after Euro 2020.
&#8220;He has much more to give and it&#8217;s about the game, improving and growing together,&#8221; said Nuno as he prepared for Sunday&#8217;s north London derby against Arsenal.
&#8220;In terms of the squad and preparation we have players who have 65/70 sessions and we have players who have 15 sessions.&#8221;
After three games, Tottenham were top of the Premier League and Arsenal rock bottom.

Arteta said confidence levels were rising after his side won their League Cup third round tie against AFC Wimbledon in midweek.

EPL: Chelsea vs Man City as Liverpool, Man Utd bid to keep pace

Five matches isn&#8217;t enough to seal a place in Europe or a spot in the Championship, but it gives a sample size just large enough to use as a reasonable part of your calculations on whether a club is in contention for the Premier League penthouse or plausible relocation.

We&#8217;re not necessarily talking about certainties for one and not the other (outside of the big boys), for example. Brighton and Hove Albion&#8217;s fourth-place spot in the table isn&#8217;t a hot ticket to Europe yet, but the Seagulls play against some lesser foes combined with their results mean it feels very unlikely that Graham Potter could push all the wrong buttons and see his side headed back to the second tier.
So let&#8217;s turn over some rocks and see what kinda bugs we find.
The unbeaten
Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United have all started with four wins and a draw.
So what&#8217;s there to divide them? Man United&#8217;s scored 13 goals, one more than Chelsea and Liverpool, but underlying numbers say we might be sleeping on the Anfield set.
While their two rivals have significantly outperformed expected goals, Liverpool&#8217;s 13.68 is the league leader and Man City is the only other club in the same stadium.
Similarly, Liverpool&#8217;s xGA trails only City and Brentford. Their shots (25) lead the PL, while possession is second only to City.
That said, the Reds quality of opponent has been substandard and their lone blemish is the same as Chelsea&#8217;s: their 1-1 draw. The Blues have wins over Spurs and Arsenal who, while not at their top powers, are the pick of the litter&#8230; and if they aren&#8217;t, it&#8217;s Aston Villa.
If all three aren&#8217;t in the top four, someone&#8217;s getting fired.
<h4>The Etihad elephant in the room</h4>
As usual, center forward or not, Manchester City is running rule over the stats book despite their opening day loss to Tottenham and recent draw with Southampton.
City was actually superior to Spurs in their 2-0 loss and you might as well say &#8220;second only to Man City&#8221; if you&#8217;re highlighting a club&#8217;s relative superiority in a character.
City is second to Liverpool in goals and shots, but leads the Premier League in:

<li>Fewest shots allowed per game (by 2.2 shots!)</li>
<li>Possession (by nearly 8 percent!)</li>
<li>Passing percentage (90%)</li>

<h4>Unlucky so far</h4>
Five clubs have failed to win a match going into the sixth weekend of games, with Southampton, Leeds, Newcastle, Burnley, and Norwich City staring at donuts.
It feels the worst for Norwich City and Newcastle. Norwich because they don&#8217;t have a point even against a challenging schedule and Newcastle because they&#8217;ve drawn two of the teams in this sad quintet.
Southampton and Burnley, however, can look at their returns and feel aggrieved but also confident, midtable in attack and defending.
Leeds remains to be seen. Everyone&#8217;s darlings aren&#8217;t scoring as much and are still shipping goals. They do, however, boast 58.6 possession (behind only Man City and Liverpool) and are seventh in shots on target.
For real for real?
Brighton and Hove Albion has been quite good and if they can turn their possession into more quality attempts on goal they will flirt with the top seven.
But the Seagulls still have to face some big teams and not just survive but thrive if they&#8217;re to stay on that stage.
Wolves can also feel like the new Brighton, a team producing offense and defending well but waiting on the rub of the green.
The Molineux set is allowing the second-fewest attempts in the league and taking the third-most. If Raul Jimenez finds any sort of his previous form, we may see Wolves rise up the table with a bullet.

Romelu Lukaku says football must take &#8220;stronger&#8221; action in the fight against racism, questioning the impact of players taking the knee before Premier League matches.
Lukaku&#8217;s Chelsea team-mate Marcos Alonso this week explained his decision to stop making the gesture, deciding instead to stand and point to the &#8220;No To Racism&#8221; badge on his shirt.
Last season, Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha stopped taking the knee, labelling it &#8220;degrading&#8221; and opting to stand instead.
Belgium international Lukaku understands those opinions, pointing to the continuing online abuse aimed at black players.
&#8220;I think we can take stronger positions, basically,&#8221; Lukaku told CNN Sport.
&#8220;Yeah, we are taking the knee but in the end everybody&#8217;s clapping but sometimes after the game, you see another insult.&#8221;

&#8220;The captains of every team, and four or five players, like the big personalities of every team, should have a meeting with the CEOs of Instagram and governments and the FA (Football Association) and the PFA (Professional Footballers&#8217; Association), and we should just sit around the table and have a big meeting about it,&#8221; Lukaku said.
&#8220;I think all of us together, have a big meeting and talk about stuff that needs to be addressed to protect the players.
&#8220;If you want to stop something, you can really do it.&#8221;
Lukaku was speaking to CNN Sport around the launch of Chelsea&#8217;s &#8220;No To Hate&#8221; photography competition, which is encouraging fans of the club around the world to send in their photos that show the diversity within the Chelsea community.
&#8220;I think right now, from the owner to us, the players, we as a club, we are really putting out a statement and taking a position that stuff like that should not be tolerated,&#8221; Lukaku said.

Two giants dodged penalty challenges to stay in the League Cup, but Manchester United wasn&#8217;t as lucky, bowing in regulation to old boss David Moyes and West Ham United on Wednesday.
Wolves vs Spurs and Chelsea vs Aston Villa both went to penalties despite goals from Harry Kane and Timo Werner for the London-based sides.

West Ham had a healthy bit of rotation as well, but Man United still held 60 percent of the ball and a 20-5 edge in shots (likely due to the Irons&#8217; early away lead).
Andriy Yarmolenko hit the goal post and Mark Noble was saved in-close by Dean Henderson as West Ham blew two late chances to put the game to bed.

<h4>Arsenal 3-0 AFC Wimbledon</h4>
Alexandre Lacazette showed Mikel Arteta what he&#8217;s been missing with a goal and an assist, albeit against lower-league opposition, as the Gunners won at home.
Emile Smith-Rowe and Eddie Nketiah had Arsenal&#8217;s other goals.
<h4>Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa</h4>
Timo Werner&#8217;s goal was canceled out by a Cameron Archer 64th-minute marker, but Prince Harry was left disappointed in penalty kicks when Kepa Arrizabalaga showed he hasn&#8217;t lost his shootout skill.

Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho scored second-half goals as Millwall gave Leicester the ball but made the Foxes sweat for their chances in the Lion&#8217;s Den.
<h4>Wolves 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur</h4>
Tanguy Ndombele scored after 13 minutes and Dele Alli set up a Harry Kane goals about 10 minutes later, but Spurs needed penalty kicks after blowing a 2-0 lead at the Molineux.
Nuno Espirito Santo&#8217;s former team struck through Leander Dendoncker before the break and Daniel Podence after it, sending the match through 90 minutes level at two.

Our fifth player Power Rankings of the 2021-22 season have arrived, as plenty of superstars have got off to a flying start in the campaign.
Simply put: it was incredibly tough to put 20 players in this list based on the crazy results across the Premier League in recent days.

Stars from Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool dominate our player Power Rankings after some impressive wins, as plenty of the big boys continue put down a marker early in the season.
With the likes of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden all still working towards full fitness, plenty more stars will be included in this list in the weeks to come.
There were also some new stars who shone and with so many amazing goals, wins and comebacks, this is going to be one heck of a season. Add to that the fact that fans are now back in full Premier League stadiums, this is what it is all about.

What did we learn during matchweek 5 of the 2021-22 Premier League?

Here&#8217;s a look at 10 things which stood out, as our writers Joe Prince-Wright (JPW), Nicholas Mendola (NM) and Andy Edwards (AE) share their observations from across the most recent Premier League games.

Let&#8217;s get to it.

1. Patience pays off for Liverpool (<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/liverpool-vs-crystal-palace-highlights-mane-salah-keita-goals" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Liverpool 3-0 Crystal Palace</a>): Through 25 minutes of the first half, Liverpool were out-shot 5-3 by Crystal Palace. It was at that point that Liverpool began to press higher up the field to win the ball back in more advantageous areas. As a result, the Reds out-shot Crystal Palace by a margin of 20-7 the rest of the game. Mane&#8217;s goal came as a result of the increased possession and goal threat as Crystal Palace drifted deeper and deeper into their own half. (AE)
2. Guardiola puts pressure on himself (<a href="https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2021/09/18/manchester-city-vs-southampton-final-score-video-highlights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Manchester City 0-0 Southampton</a>): After his midweek comments asking for Manchester City&#8217;s fans to turn up for the game against Southampton, Pep Guardiola put himself under a lot of pressure. His team played like they were feeling the pressure. City never got going and although Saints defended well, this was more about City lacking urgency. Perhaps the expectation levels of the crowd piled a little extra pressure on them? Whatever you think about their attendance figures, it was just such a bizarre thing for Guardiola to say, and then not back down on. It is all so unnecessary with a four-horse Premier League title race already heating up. (JPW)
3. Moyes&#8217; gamble hands Man United the win (<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/west-ham-vs-manchester-united-final-score-de-gea-delivers-dramatic-end" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">West Ham 1-2 Manchester United</a>): Lukasz Fabianski was spectacular in holding Manchester United down, making eight saves including six from shots inside the box and one spectacular stop on Cristiano Ronaldo (two really, but Ronaldo deposited the rebound). But right when you were ready to salute one keeper, David De Gea stopped cold Mark Noble&#8217;s stoppage-time penalty. When has asking a sub to make his first strike of the ball a match-leveling penalty kick been a good idea (even for a veteran and living club legend like Noble)? Wow.

4. Unflappable, decisive Tuchel gets it right (Tottenham 0-3 Chelsea): Is it possible Chelsea would&#8217;ve turned its first-half performance on its ear had Tuchel not yanked Mason Mount at halftime? Of course, but Tuchel&#8217;s willingness to take off a reliable starter at the break sure looks an inspired switch after the Blues struck twice in quick succession early in the second frame. The tactical adjustment worked and the substitute, N&#8217;Golo Kante, scored to boot. (NM)
5. Odegaard (and Partey) are special (<a href="https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2021/09/18/burnley-vs-arsenal-odegaard-plus-clean-sheet-equals-three-points/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Burnley 0-1 Arsenal</a>): Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Nuno Tavares all deserve praise for their roles at the back (we&#8217;ve saluted Kieran Tierney plenty in the past), but with Martin Odegaard pulling the strings and a healthy-for-now Thomas Partey disrupting the midfield, this can be a team that pulls itself into the top-six mix in the Premier League, if Nicolas Pepe gets help from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mikel Arteta lets Alexandre Lacazette play more often. 6. Seagulls finding clinical edge (<a href="https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2021/09/19/brighton-vs-leicester-final-score-seagulls-hold-off-foxes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Brighton 2-1 Leicester</a>): They have found a way to win tight games early in the season, and that was the only thing missing from Brighton last season. Graham Potter&#8217;s side look more streetwise this campaign and they have now won three games by a one-goal margin so far this season. They do have tougher fixtures coming up, but this is a superb start to the season for the 2020-21 expected goals kings&#8230; (JPW)
7. Bailey is a treat, but can he stay healthy? (Aston Villa 3-0 Everton) Leon Bailey has been mostly limited to sub minutes, but that&#8217;ll soon change for the ex-Bayer Leverkusen star and Jamaican international if he can stay healthy. His electric skill set means he&#8217;s going to get free often and he buried a chance past Asmir Begovic at the end of Villa&#8217;s three-goal second-half outburst. But he was soon on the turf and being tended to by trainers. (NM)
8. Second half even better from Newcastle (<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/newcastle-vs-leeds-raphinha-saint-max-trade-super-goals-in-draw" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Newcastle 1-1 Leeds</a>): Leeds were far more hesitant to risk leaving themselves exposed defensively in the second half, and that paid dividends for Newcastle once they started winning the ball back 10-15 yards higher up the field. Allan Saint-Maximin was must-see every time he touched the ball and reminded everyone just how special he is on his day. It&#8217;s a good point for Newcastle because it is a point, but anytime they can realistically say they were the better side (even narrowly so) they really need to be winning instead. (AE)
9. Toney, Mbeumo a great partnership (<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/wolves-vs-brentford-final-score-bees-sting-wolves-video-highlights" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Wolves 0-2 Brentford</a>): They caused havoc in the first half and their telepathic understanding was the difference. Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo are relentless and the way they run off each other and work in tandem caused Wolves so many problems. Toney had two goals disallowed (one set up by Mbeumo) in the first half, and Mbeumo should have had two others in the second. Toney set up Mbeumo for his goal and they are the reason why a hard-working Brentford side will be clear of relegation trouble this season. (JPW)
10. Sarr, Dennis a dangerous duo on the wings (<a href="https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2021/09/18/norwich-vs-watford-highlights-sarr-the-star-hopeful-hornets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Norwich 1-3 Watford</a>): Ismaila Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis took each player&#8217;s goal tally to three and two on the season, respectively. The 23-year-olds have now scored five of Watford&#8217;s six goals this season. Watford should have better luck battling against relegation than a side — oh, let&#8217;s just use Norwich as an example — that relies so heavily upon one player, typically a poaching center forward, to keep them up. Sarr and Dennis affect the game in front of goal, as well as the 30 and 40 yards of the field which immediately precedes scoring chances. (AE)
