Former National President of the Nigerian Optometric Association, Professor Emmanuel Esenwah, has cautioned Nigerians against seeking eye treatment from religious institutions or purchasing eye drops from unqualified individuals when faced with eye issues.
During his keynote address at the World Eye Day celebration in Umuahia on Thursday, Professor Esenwah emphasized that patients should consult qualified eye care professionals in government hospitals.
He also warned that using breast milk as a treatment for eye problems in certain communities poses more risks than benefits.
The Professor of Optometry, who serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), advocated for early and regular eye examinations to identify issues before they escalate.
Additionally, he proposed free screenings and the distribution of free glasses in schools and communities to safeguard the vision of children and the elderly, particularly for welders, carpenters, and timber workers who are exposed to sawdust.
In her remarks, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, the Administrator of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, stated that her office is actively addressing the eye health challenges faced by Abia residents with the support of Governor Alex Otti.
She encouraged Abia residents to have their eyes examined regularly at government-equipped hospitals instead of relying on herbal remedies or seeking treatment in religious establishments.
Furthermore, Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, reiterated that the state government’s reliance on unapproved free medical outreach programs remains in effect, urging residents to utilize government hospitals and primary healthcare centers.
