The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to refrain from politicizing security matters and instead concentrate on addressing the challenges facing the state.
Senator Barau was responding to assertions made by the Kano State Government following its 34th Executive Council Meeting. The government alleged that one of his remarks could undermine ongoing security initiatives. Barau refuted these allegations as untrue and emphasized that the issue of insecurity in the nation, including banditry in parts of Kano, necessitates collective action from all stakeholders.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the senator rejected the accusations and challenged the government to provide proof.
He stated: “The media office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, CFR, FCNA, has been alerted to false, reckless, and defamatory claims by the Kano State Government… that His Excellency… made a remark that could jeopardize the security efforts in the state.”
He further remarked: “It is unfortunate that the state government has stooped to such a low level by fabricating and concocting lies to damage the growing reputation of the Deputy President of the Senate. At no point did Senator Barau make any statement that could undermine security efforts.”
Barau asserted that he has consistently collaborated with relevant stakeholders to tackle insecurity in Kano and across Nigeria. He reiterated his challenge to the government, stating, “We challenge them to present the recording in which the Deputy President of the Senate made any statement that could undermine security efforts.”
The senator, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, called upon Governor Yusuf to take governance more seriously.
He commented, “Once governance was prioritized, our beloved state of Kano was a close second to Lagos in terms of prosperity; however, unfortunately, misgovernance has diminished this.”
He added that Kano can reclaim its former glory if the appropriate decisions are made, stating, “We possess all the necessary resources to restore the illustrious days of our state, but the governor is not taking the necessary actions.”
Barau also enumerated several security initiatives he has supported in the state.
He has provided vehicles to police units, motorcycles for officers in Kano North, renovated sections of the state police headquarters, and constructed police stations in various locations. Additionally, he has supported the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kano.
According to the statement, “The Deputy President of the Senate has also facilitated the establishment of the training college for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gwarzo, the Nigeria Police Service Commission training institute in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service training school in Bichi.”
He has also installed solar streetlights in numerous communities to assist security agencies in conducting night patrols.
The statement concluded by noting that Senator Barau has made “significant contributions” to enhancing security in Kano and advised the state government to emulate his example rather than attack his character.
