SNOOKER icon Ken Doherty has announced his retirement.
, has been a professional for 36 years since his 1990 debut.

But it seems he has decided to step away from the top level of after an illustrious career.
He revealed to the Irish Independent that he would be leaving the World Snooker Tour behind, saying: “I’ll be retiring this year and not going to play on the tour this coming season.”
He will, however, continue to appear on the Seniors Tour.
Irishman Doherty is the first and only snooker star from his homeland to take home the game’s biggest prize – the World Championship at the Crucible.
He won the 1997 edition of the tournament over the legendary , defeating him 18-12 in the final, snapping the Scot’s 29-match winning streak in Sheffield.
With that win he became the first man to have won both the amateur and professional World Championships, and had previously won the u-21 competition as well.
He reached a career-high ranking of world No2 in the 2006/2007 season, and won a total of six ranking events during his professional career.
But his last ranking event win came in 2006, and he has slipped down the rankings to the 106th spot in recent years.

Alongside his professional commitments, Doherty has become one of the more recognisable pundits in the sport.
He first dipped his toe into commentary in 2007, and has only grown more prominent in coverage of the game’s biggest events, recently covering the world snooker championship from the booth in April.
