Cops have launched a manhunt to find the attacker, described as a bald white man, around 5ft 10ins, aged between 30 and 50 years old.

The force held a press conference today as they stepped up efforts to trace the culprit.

Officers said the traumatised youngster was a tourist on holiday with his parents at the time of the horror attack.

The boy was in a tent on his own when an unknown male entered and sexually assaulted him.

His parents were in a tent next to him.

There is a significant police presence at the popular campsite while cops carry out a large investigation.

Officers are combing CCTV footage and questioning campers as they leave and arrive at the site.

Detective Superintendent Calum Smith of Police Scotland said: “One of the parents has come out from where they were sleeping and has seen the assailant, the suspect leaving the area.

“Our officers carried out CCTV enquiries, we’ll be speaking to witnesses, and we will be speaking to anyone who’s been in the area at the time.

“I want to encourage anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward with information to us.

“Regardless of how small it may seem, it could be the information that allows us to piece together events leading up to the incident.

“I would ask people to think back, have they seen anyone acting suspiciously beforehand or immediately afterwards.”

Officers say the man may have been a fellow camper who planned the attack.

Detective Superintendent Calum Smith added: “We’re interviewing people as they come and go from the campsite and building details where relevant.

“The owners of the campsite are engaging closely with us and we’ve got a good line of communication with the staff there.”
