The Englishman was two points shy of the highest possible run of 155.

He captured the imagination of fans and rivals alike with the break, with Selby heaping praise on .

Selby said: “Ronnie’s 153 was an amazing feat to do.

“It had to be him, didn’t it? If somebody was going to do it, it had to be him. It was probably the only record he’s not got.

“Ronnie is the greatest player of all time, and anything he does, it doesn’t really surprise you.

“He’s just an absolute genius and a credit to our game.”

O’Sullivan, 50, became the first player to make a 153 break and he had a after the feat.

He said: “It was a great buzz.

“I could have tried to pot the other black but I just thought you know what?

“I don’t think anyone has ever made a break above 147 on TV before.

“So I thought it would be the first.

“I’ve been the first of many things so I thought I might as well get that one as well.

“I’ve never made anything more than a 147. Listen, for me it’s the excitement, the buzz.

“If the excitement and buzz is there, then I can do great things you know.

“But unless there’s some sort of something at the end of it…I haven’t made a 147 for years but I did realise that if I’d made two in certain tournaments, there’s a prize.

“So I went for it (in Saudi). There should be a good reward at the end of it.”
