THE AI company behind ChatGPT has shut down a popular app just months after its launch.

Just six month months after its September launch, is being shut down.

Marking OpenAI’s second app, the video creation platform was originally met with great fanfare.

However, despite one million downloads within the first five days, and a number one spot in the US store in November, Sora failed to gain long-term traction.

Unlike , the video app has dipped in popularity in recent weeks, leading to the decision to axe it altogether.

Sora featured creation tools and a feed for generated content.

Video creation on the app had no limits, allowing users to easily create clips from text prompts.

However, OpenAI’s decision to tighten up restrictions around using intellectual property without permission marked the beginning of the end for the app.

The company announced the end of Sora in a post on X , writing: “We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you.

“What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.”

The Sora team added that they will share more details soon, including “timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work”.

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal , the move comes as OpenAI is discontinuing its video AI model efforts across the board.

The outlet reported that OpenAI is focusing its attention on creating a super app that combines ChatGPT, Codex development tools, and its Atlas web browser.
