The Rivers State Government has reiterated its steadfast commitment to the welfare of its workforce, following the approval and distribution of a N100,000 Christmas bonus to all civil and public servants, as well as pensioners on the state government's payroll.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently authorized this payment, marking the third consecutive year that the administration has provided the Christmas bonus since taking office.
This reaffirmation was made in response to comments from the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Rivers State Council, Alex Agwanwor, who praised the governor for this gesture, characterizing it as a sign of responsive and worker-friendly governance.
In response to the commendation, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, stated that the bonus, “which has become an annual tradition enjoyed by civil and public servants on the state government payroll, is a token of appreciation for the dedication to service demonstrated throughout the year.”
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Director of Publications in the ministry, Chris Davies, Sirawoo emphasized that the governor remains committed to proactive policies that provide a social safety net for state employees and their families, particularly in light of current economic challenges.
He remarked that the state government views the NLC not only as a labor union but also as an essential partner in the “Rivers First” development agenda.
The statement further noted that the NLC’s public acknowledgment of this gesture is a testament to the cooperative relationship between the current administration and the labor union.
Sirawoo also described public servants as the greatest asset of the state, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to prioritizing their welfare.
He added, “While this bonus aims to enhance the festive season, our long-term objective remains the continuous improvement of the working environment and the welfare of every individual serving Rivers State.”
