The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, is progressing as planned.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Enemi George, made this announcement in a statement on Friday.
George stated that this action aligns with the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
He further noted that the two notices of allegations of gross misconduct, submitted in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution against the Governor and Deputy, have been sent to them by the Speaker of the House, and their responses are awaited.
According to him, the House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to represent the will of the people and to prevent any violations of the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other official of the Rivers State Government. He emphasized that the Assembly members are committed to this responsibility.
“We are aware that certain individuals and media outlets are once again attempting to mislead the public, particularly by suggesting that the impeachment process has been halted or abandoned. Some are spreading false narratives to create discord between the House and well-meaning Nigerians.
“Therefore, with the approval of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule DSSRS, I urge everyone to disregard their tactics, as their efforts have already failed. We remain dedicated to our constitutional obligations and will not be swayed by petty intimidation or threats from those who do not have the best interests of our country's growing democracy at heart.
“Finally, we express our gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, and we thank all stakeholders and leaders at every level. We also extend our warm regards to all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project.
“May God continue to bless our beloved Rivers State and Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
