The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has cautioned vandals and trespassers to refrain from approaching railway tracks as the country transitions to electric rail lines.
Opeifa issued this warning during an interview on The Exchange Podcast with Femi Soneye.
He stated that the ongoing electrification of rail tracks represents a significant advancement in modernizing Nigeria’s rail system, but it also introduces serious safety risks.
“Electric rail is safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly, but it poses inherent dangers for those who tamper with the lines,” he explained.
He further noted that individuals who attempt to cut or interfere with the upgraded tracks face the risk of severe injury or death from electrocution.
Opeifa elaborated that the NRC has enhanced security measures to safeguard the rail infrastructure, which include surveillance systems, monitoring teams, and public awareness campaigns.
“NRC is making substantial investments in security, surveillance, and public education initiatives to protect both the infrastructure and communities surrounding the tracks,” the MD stated.
He urged residents living near rail corridors to avoid entering restricted areas and to report any suspicious activities.
He emphasized that the new system is a national asset that must be safeguarded.
“Modern rail lines are national treasures. Protecting them is essential,” he asserted.
The NRC director also indicated that the electrification project is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing passenger services, expanding freight operations, and encouraging greater private sector involvement in the industry.
