Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, is confident that Plateau State will continue to be a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even if Governor Caleb Mutfwang switches to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to run for the governorship in the 2027 election.

Speculations have been rampant regarding the possibility of Mutfwang leaving the PDP for the APC ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections. However, Mwadkwon, who previously represented the Plateau North Senatorial District in the National Assembly until he was removed by an Appeal Court ruling, asserted that even if this occurs, the APC would not pose a threat, as the state will remain a PDP stronghold.

The former senator made this confident statement during a meeting with select journalists in Jos on Thursday. He also dismissed claims that Mutfwang is among four PDP governors contemplating a defection to the ruling APC, reaffirming the governor’s recent rejection of these defection rumors.

“Plateau has always been a PDP state, and regardless of whether the governor departs from the party, the people of the state are deeply committed to the PDP,” the former lawmaker stated.

Mwadkwon emphasized that even if Governor Mutfwang chooses to leave the party and run on another platform, the PDP would identify a competent replacement for him, and the party would emerge victorious. He advised Mutfwang to remain in the PDP, as it is the party that would best serve his interests.

“The Plateau State Governor has publicly denied any intention to join the APC on multiple occasions; therefore, I believe he has no interest in doing so. Despite numerous appeals, he has consistently maintained his position on this matter,” Mwadkwon added.
