The Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM) has condemned the attack on Saturday in the Kwi Community of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, by suspected Fulani militants, resulting in the deaths of approximately seven individuals and several others injured.

This invasion occurred around 10:30 PM, shortly after the earlier killing of one Kurang Daniel, who was shot while working on his farm.

In a statement released on Sunday, signed by BYM President Dalyop Mwantiri and Secretary-General Bature Adazaram, the group alleged that the attackers frequently fabricate false narratives of assaults on herdsmen to justify their violence against Berom communities.

The BYM asserted that the attack on Kwi was unprovoked, despite claims from a Fulani group alleging that some Berom youths had previously attacked them, resulting in the deaths of five herders and the loss of over 50 cows.

“Information available to the Berom Youths Moulder Association indicates that the Fulani have falsely concocted typical lies and fallacies for security operatives, asserting that the residents of Kwi attacked their cattle, which has not been substantiated, as no evidence of any cow being harmed or herder attacked has been established as of the time of this report, following a thorough search to verify such claims,” the BYM statement read.

The association refuted these allegations, stating that it is one of the tactics and deceptions employed by the Fulani militias whenever they intend to assault any village.

The BYM added that Fulani groups often enlist the help of a specific security expert who utilizes his platform to disseminate propaganda, portraying themselves as victims when they are, in fact, the aggressors.

The organization expressed concern over what it termed a pattern where deadly attacks seem to occur following meetings between Fulani and Berom representatives at security offices.

They referenced a recent ambush where community and youth leaders were attacked while returning from a security meeting at the Sector 4 Headquarters, resulting in four fatalities, two injuries, and two individuals missing.

The association also urged security forces, particularly Sector 4 of the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), to take decisive measures.

“The Berom Youths Moulder Association is earnestly appealing to Sector 4 Operation Enduring Peace to utilize all available resources and professionalism to apprehend the Fulani individuals responsible for these unfounded and misleading claims, ensuring proper investigation and prosecution,” the statement concluded.

The BYM cautioned that the threat to the Berom people will continue unless more effective measures are implemented against Fass and other regions where suspected militants are believed to have established safe havens.
