The Federal Government has been urged to develop extensive natural gas reserves in the South East.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State made this appeal in Aba on Friday, during the commissioning of several projects he implemented in Aba and Umuahia by David Umahi, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
He stated that natural gas has become increasingly vital in the new global energy landscape, but expressed concern that the significant deposits beneath the South East remain untapped.
He emphasized that it would greatly benefit the Nigerian economy for these gas deposits to be developed in a manner that does not endanger the ecosystem, assuring that the Governors of the South East would collaborate with the Federal Government to develop the fields.
He also urged the Federal Government to establish a functional rail network connecting the South East and South-South zones to other regions, asserting that this would enhance trade, attract investments, and alleviate migration pressures in urban areas outside of these two regions.
Otti suggested that the rail lines should include “stations in all major agricultural and commercial towns along the corridor.”
Additionally, he called for the optimization of sea ports near the South-East and South-South regions, mentioning that his administration is conducting a feasibility study to construct a seaport in the Obuaku area of Abia.
He further noted that his administration is committed to investing in infrastructure, power, health, ICT, and other sectors.
