The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that the defection of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not hinder its investigation into allegations of corruption against him.
The Director of Legal and Prosecution at the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, made this announcement on Thursday during a press conference to commemorate the second anniversary of the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in office.
Tahir refuted allegations that Okowa was being protected due to his political shift, emphasizing that no individual is exempt from investigation or prosecution based on their political affiliations.
“Someone inquired whether it is true that politicians who switch to the ruling party are protected. The straightforward answer is that it is not true,” he stated.
“I believe the reference pertains to the case of a former governor of Delta State. To my knowledge, that case is still under investigation. In due time, justice will prevail,” he added.
DAILY POST recalls that in November 2024, the EFCC apprehended Okowa over allegations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion during his eight-year term as governor of the state.
The former governor is also accused of misusing public funds to purchase properties in Asaba, the state capital, as well as in Abuja.
It is also worth noting that in April 2025, Okowa, who was the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC alongside his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and several other political officeholders in the state.
