Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has commended successive groups of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for upholding the fundamental values of the Scheme.
He offered this praise during a visit from the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, at his residence in Abuja.
Gowon, who was instrumental in establishing the Scheme in 1973, remarked that the contributions of Corps members to urban and rural development, education, health sectors, as well as elections and other national initiatives, are commendable.
The elder statesman expressed his pleasure at the achievements of the NYSC over the years and praised the administrators of the Scheme for maintaining the vision of its founders.
“I would like to commend all the staff of the Scheme from its inception to the present. I say well done and thank you for ensuring its success,” he stated.
He explained that the concept of creating the NYSC emerged from the collective desire of various segments of Nigeria, who recognized the necessity of utilizing the country's human resources to address its challenges following the civil war.
While acknowledging that the deployment policy of the Scheme has resulted in inter-ethnic marriages and numerous other advantages, Gowon emphasized the importance of making it more relevant in light of contemporary realities.
He called for increased support from stakeholders for the Scheme, stating that this would assist in promoting entrepreneurial and self-employment opportunities for Corps members, which is one of the objectives outlined in the NYSC Act.
Earlier, Nafiu expressed his appreciation to the former Head of State for his unwavering guidance towards the Scheme.
He assured that the entire NYSC staff remains dedicated to continuing its successes and achieving new milestones in its post-golden jubilee era.
