Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has voiced optimism that the convicted leader of the Indigenous People’s of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will be released through political means.
Kalu stated that there is still hope for Kanu’s freedom despite his conviction.
This statement was made following a federal high court in Abuja, led by Justice James Omotosho, sentencing the IPOB leader to life imprisonment on Thursday for terrorism.
The Deputy Speaker mentioned that efforts are being made to find a political solution to ultimately secure Kanu’s release.
Kalu also expressed his confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, believing that the President will heed the pleas of concerned Igbo leaders regarding the situation, noting that the President is likely to be receptive to such requests.
He urged the people of the South East, and indeed all Nigerians, to remain calm, assuring them that hope is not lost.
This information was shared in a statement released by Livinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abuja.
Kalu stated, “It is now time to explore political solutions that had been obstructed while the matter was before the court. Now that the court proceedings are complete, we must intensify our request for the President’s intervention, and we are confident that the President is open to it. We will achieve this. All hope is not lost. Our people should remain calm.”
