Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ibadan North West local government area of Oyo State have expressed their opposition to the extension of the tenure of the acting chairman, Mr. Olusola Tokunbo Adekanbi.
On Thursday, the members unanimously urged the acting chairman and his team to vacate their positions immediately, allowing the elected chairman, Jelili Asukuna, and other elected officials to assume their rightful roles.
This call was made during an emergency meeting held in Ibadan on Thursday.
The meeting saw the participation of hundreds of party members from the eleven electoral wards that comprise the local government area.
A party chieftain in the area, Mr. Adekunle Abass Akande, who proposed the motion, emphasized that the decision was made to address the issues facing the party within the local government.
Speaking to journalists during the meeting, Akande stated, “We all stand to gain from this party. Our purpose here is to seek solutions to the challenges confronting us. We cannot allow the current situation to persist. How can we benefit from it?”
“We want the elected executives to take their rightful positions. Those currently in charge are not the legitimate executives. We demand that the recognized chairman and all other executive members assume their roles.”
“We insist that the acting chairman step down. Thus, we have resolved that the authentic executives should return to their positions. They were elected by us and are recognized by the party at the national level. There is no crisis here.”
A former leader of the legislative arm in the Ibadan North West local government area, Remi Ajanaku, remarked that the members decided to take this action to restore integrity within the political party.
He stated, “Our resolution today is to request that the acting chairman step down and allow the authentic chairman to take charge. This decision was made today.”
“We are doing this to restore integrity to the political party. There are certain irregularities occurring that we seek to rectify.”
