A former spokesperson for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, stated on Thursday that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not interested in continuing his terrorism trial.
Akande noted that Kanu is more focused on seeking a political resolution to his prolonged trial.
This information was shared during a discussion on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, shortly after Kanu announced his intention to represent himself before Justice James Omotosho at the Abuja Federal High Court.
Kanu made this decision after his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, withdrew from the case.
However, Akande remarked: “It’s evident that Kanu is not keen on pursuing this case because of his and his lawyers' behavior after they expressed a desire for a swift trial, especially with a judge prepared to act appropriately. Now, he wants to represent himself? This indicates to me that he’s not interested in continuing the case in court.
“He is looking for a political resolution, which has some merit; there have been others who behaved like Kanu, and their situations were resolved politically.
“So, I believe that is his primary interest. If you examine the trajectory of the case, part of the reason it has dragged on is due to various antics from both the government and his side, including the frequent changes of lawyers.
“I think we should consider a political solution not because I doubt that Kanu deserves his day in court, but clearly, Kanu is being prolonged in this matter. For the sake of our national unity, we need to seek a political resolution to this issue.”
