A member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Abiola Awoyeye, has stated that the newly enacted Osun State Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill, 2025, will save lives and protect hospitals from undue harassment.
The lawmaker, who represents the Ife Central State Constituency, made this announcement in a statement following the passage of the bill by the state assembly on October 21, 2025.
Awoyeye clarified that the bill is intended to ensure that gunshot victims throughout the state receive immediate medical care without the necessity of a police report or an upfront payment.
He noted that the legislation also protects healthcare workers and hospitals from intimidation or legal repercussions while performing emergency services.
He stated, “The bill aims to eliminate the rejection of gunshot victims in the state. It represents a significant advancement in promoting public safety and preserving the sanctity of human life, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”
The lawmaker further emphasized that the bill establishes a life-saving framework designed to eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy in emergency medical response.
“Every human life, regardless of the situation, deserves a fair opportunity to survive. That is the essence of this bill,” he added.
According to him, medical professionals and observers across the state have praised the assembly for this initiative, describing it as a testament to the government’s responsiveness to the welfare and safety of its citizens.
The statement highlighted that residents believe the bill will put an end to the recurring instances of hospitals denying treatment to gunshot victims due to fear of reprisal from law enforcement agencies.
“With this legislation, Osun State joins the growing number of states making strides in protecting human lives and supporting medical professionals in the execution of their duties,” Awoyeye remarked.
He also noted that the new bill aligns with other recently passed legislations, including the Osun State Sports Commission Establishment Bill, 2025, the Osun State Start-up Bill, 2025, and the Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peacebuilding Bill, 2025.
The Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill now awaits the approval of the Executive Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, to become law.
