Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has criticized Chelsea following their surprising 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Englishman specifically pointed out one player for criticism after the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat at home at Stamford Bridge.

Alejandro Garnacho scored the opening goal for Chelsea just four minutes into the match, but the visitors made a comeback with goals from Wilson Isidor and Chemsdine Talbi, securing all three points.

Arsenal legend and lifelong Chelsea supporter Merson condemned the entire team and particularly called out young striker Marc Guiu, stating that the former Barcelona player needs to be replaced immediately.

Guiu is currently stepping in for Liam Delap, who is recovering from a long-term injury.

“I was really impressed with Sunderland today, but not with Chelsea,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I expected them to struggle. They desperately need Delap back; they need a central figure.”

“Guiu played up front and I believe he only touched the ball nine or ten times. You can't have that in a team that is meant to control the game.”

“Chelsea ran out of ideas. They had winger after winger, but half of them failed to get past anyone. Joao Pedro seemed lost as a number ten. They struggled and were quite disappointing.”

Following his strong performances in Chelsea’s last two matches, Enzo Maresca gave Guiu his first Premier League start against Sunderland, a club he was loaned to at the beginning of the season.

This latest defeat has caused Chelsea to drop to eighth place in the standings, now five points behind the leaders, Arsenal.
