One of the largest mobile networks in the UK has discontinued the service it was originally based on after over 23 years.

This decision may leave a small number of customers without data access if they have not yet upgraded, despite multiple warnings about impending changes—another competing network is set to do the same.

across the UK to facilitate faster 4G and 5G services.

The majority of users will not be impacted by this change, as their devices will automatically utilize the newer network infrastructure.

However, some very old devices cannot support 4G or 5G, meaning that users still relying on these handsets will be unable to access the internet while on the move.

Three has confirmed that it has completed the shutdown of its 3G network.

The last remaining masts were turned off at the end of November after years of preparation and notifications.

“A targeted campaign was launched to reach, inform, and assist the minority of Three customers still using 3G-only devices,” Three stated.

“This extensive effort was carried out alongside updates to Three’s core network.

“This approach ensured that there was no service disruption for customers of MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) utilizing Three’s network (such as SMARTY) or for international visitors roaming on Three’s network in the UK.”

This transition marks the conclusion of Three’s original 3G network.

Three pioneered the launch of a 3G-only network in the UK back in March 2003.

Its sister network is scheduled for a similar transition in 2024.

A competitor plans to shut down its 3G services in February 2024.

O2 is the final network expected to complete its transition by the end of 2025.

“We understand that the vast majority of our customers already possess a 4G or 5G device and will not need to take any action. We are directly contacting those who will be affected to offer guidance and support,” stated Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer of Virgin Media O2.

“While customers without a 4G or 5G device in Scotland are especially encouraged to act quickly, it is crucial for all UK residents to upgrade soon to continue using mobile data after the 3G shutdown, so please take the necessary steps if needed.”
