Mixed reactions have trailed the recent order by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission for Main Power to reduce its electricity tariff for Band A customers by N49 to N209/kilowatt per hour to N160/kWh.

EERC had noted that the new tariff is expected to kick off on August 1, 2025; tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remained frozen.

The chairman of the EERC, Chijioke Okonkwo, said the is justifiable and fair following a review of the disco’s entire cost.

“We reviewed their entire costs, using our Tariff Methodology Regulations 2024, and the supporting Distribution Tariff Model to get an average price of N94.

“The price is low because the federal government has been subsidising electricity generation costs, which charges only N45 out of the actual cost of N112. That was how we came about the average tariff of N94 as a cost-reflective tariff at our level as a subnational electricity market,” he said.

The development has been received differently by stakeholders in the country’s power sector.

The Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) chief executive officer, Joy Ogaji kicked against the downward review of electricity bills announced by EERC.

Ogaji clarified that the Nigerian government has no power over electricity subsidies but rather accumulated debts, which amounted to N4 trillion after the end of quarter 1 2025.

“It is imperative to state that there is no FGN policy on subsidies. It’s debt accumulation!!! If anyone has the proposed policy document, please kindly share it publicly,” she stated.

However, other power sector stakeholders welcomed the electricity tariff reduction in Enugu.
