BARRY BANNAN’S wife has launched a furious swipe at Millwall boss Alex Neil after the club’s crushing play-off defeat to Hull.

Veteran midfielder came off the bench shortly before Hull grabbed their breakthrough goal, and some fans quickly pointed the finger at the former Sheffield Wednesday captain.

But Bannan’s wife Chloe hit back on social media after one supporter claimed her husband was being unfairly blamed for the defeat.

She wrote: “Always Barry’s fault. A good manager would help.”

The outburst piles pressure on Neil after failed to deliver in one of their biggest games of the season.

Bannan, 36, only joined Millwall in January after ending an 11-year spell at , where he became a cult hero thanks to his loyalty during the club’s financial turmoil.

The experienced midfielder was left out of the starting XI for both legs of the play-off semi-final against Hull, fuelling further frustration among supporters.

Meanwhile, Hull are now just one game away from a return to the Premier League for the first time in nine years.

The visitors silenced a hostile atmosphere at The Den with two second-half strikes to book their place at Wembley.

After a tense first half, Hull finally broke through when Algerian winger Mohamed Belloumi curled a superb effort into the far corner after drifting inside from the right.

The away end erupted as Hull took control of the tie.

Millwall pushed desperately for a response but their attacking gamble left gaps at the back and Hull punished them late on.

Belloumi led a rapid counter-attack before teeing up , whose low effort slipped under goalkeeper to seal the win in the 79th minute.

Gelhardt said afterwards: “The lads are buzzing to go to Wembley.

“The second goal was something we’ve done all season; counterattacking, it’s a credit to the lads.”

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic also earned praise after guiding his side through a fiery encounter in South London.

Millwall continued to push until the final whistle but could not find a way back as their promotion hopes collapsed in front of their home fans.
