However, he was dropped due to poor performances after managing to score points in just two of his 43 race starts with the team over a two-year spell.
Schumacher has been back behind the wheel plenty since then, including achieving three podiums with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship in 2024 and 2025.
He then moved into IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing last November.
But his debut in the series at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday ended in disaster as he lasted just four corners before a three-car collision ended his race.
Schumacher was caught in a crash between Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci and was forced to retire the car.
The 26-year-old said: “To be honest, my first thought was: ‘Can I maybe reverse this thing out of here’.
“But then the Safety Car arrived faster than expected, the engine was turned off, and the AMR people got me out immediately.
“We’re now looking at what we could have done better. Qualifying was one point. We were obviously got blocked, lost momentum, and missed out on a better group.
“The consequences followed promptly on Sunday, as there is little room for error at the back of the field.
“It’s racing. When you start at the back, there are always moments when you go into a corner with three or four cars side by side. That in itself is a risk.
“The most important lesson for us is that we need to qualify further up the grid. It’s as simple as that.”
And following his latest crash, uncle – himself a six-time F1 grand prix winner – now believes “the door is closed” to his nephew in terms of returning to F1.
The 50-year-old told Sky Deutschland: “With this step, this door is also closed.”
Schumacher did confess he believed Mick deserved a seat in F1 for this season following talks with and Alpine over a return to the grid, but said a return to the series his father once dominated now seemed to lack fuel.
