MIGHTY Michael van Gerwen acknowledges that he is experiencing the most challenging period of his life.
The three-time world champion is set to return to the major stage on Tuesday, aiming to secure a SEVENTH World Grand Prix title in Leicester.

However, at 36 years old, he is facing his own annus horribilis as he and his father Henri battle cancer.
Despite this difficult year, the Dutch star remains determined, expressing his hunger and desire to compete for major titles once again.
When asked if this is the hardest time in his life, he responded: “Yes, 100 percent, without a doubt.”
“My dad is doing okay; he is currently undergoing seven weeks of radiotherapy and possibly chemotherapy. After that, hopefully, everything will be fine.”
“They believe they have successfully removed everything for the second time in 18 months.”
“He had his operation just days before the Matchplay, which wasn’t the ideal preparation for me.”
“Sometimes, other things in life take precedence.”
Van Gerwen also admitted that he is still grappling with many issues, stating, “Not yet. I’m in the midst of a divorce, and I take some time with the kids.”
“Everything has changed for me. I need to establish a new routine.”
“I know it will take a few more months before I feel completely settled. I’ll be back, don’t worry!”
“The tournaments are more challenging; you need to invest time and get back to practicing. I need to find a solution for my personal life. Everything needs to fall into place.”
“That takes time. I’m not going to rush it. People can say whatever they want; I will handle this my way. I’ve done it my way for the last 15 years, and I will continue to do so.”
Van Gerwen, who will face Dirk van Duijvenbode on Tuesday, has been enjoying himself at the Tomorrowland festival in Ibiza recently, which gained significant attention on social media.
He added, “Sometimes you need to take time off, relax, and immerse yourself in a different environment. I was in Ibiza with my kids and then alone. I attended Tomorrowland and participated in many enjoyable activities.”
“Now I need to focus on playing darts, practicing, and getting back into my routine.”
“I’ve never been in this situation before. I was with my wife for 17 and a half years. This is a new chapter for me.”
Nevertheless, MVG remains optimistic that he will soon regain his best form and challenge the dominant players.
He said, “Of course, losses are disappointing, but they also shape you as a player. I know my capabilities, and everyone else does too.”
“I’ve experienced tough times before when I didn’t perform well.”
“I believe he (Luke Littler) is doing exceptionally well for himself and for the sport of darts.”
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You need to ensure you are in it for the long haul. I’ve been with the PDC for 18 years.”
“You can talk about it, but you must also act. I want to succeed. If you lack the hunger, it might be time to pursue something else. I still enjoy performing on the big stages.”
