TOTTENHAM slipped to a heavy Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid – on a pitch which has not recovered since the Miami Dolphins held training sessions at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.

Spurs were forced to endure a night to forget as they allowed their hosts to race into a four-goal lead inside 22 minutes.

– leaving Tottenham with an almighty task as they look to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

The North Londoners struggled to get to grips with the slippery surface in the early exchanges.

And the Daily Star report that Atletico have been having issues with their pitch since NFL franchise Miami Dolphins trained there last November.

Atletico were forced to replace the grass midway through the season because of the problems.

But the surface has got worse thanks to persistent rain and snow hitting the Spanish capital.

It has led to patchy grass, loose turf and uneven sections that have caused havoc for opponents.

Antonin Kinsky, who was by Tottenham boss Igor Tudor, found it particularly difficult to remain on his feet.

The keeper, 22, slipped to allow Marcos Llorente to give Atletico an early advantage before his misplaced pass was a gift for Julian Alvarez.

Micky van de Ven also lost his footing to hand Antoine Griezmann a chance he took to double Atletico’s lead.

Speaking last month, Koke said: “Honestly, the pitch is not in good condition.

“We slip, the turf comes up. A team like Atletico needs the pitch to be good in order to play.

“We’re expected to perform at a high level, and we need a pitch of that level to be able to do so – a top-quality surface.

“Being realistic, we have to play better. It’s not an excuse, but here we’re slipping, and the best conditions are like the pitch was the other day at La Cartuja.”

Griezmann, 34, also admitted that Atletico profited from constantly losing their footing.

The World Cup winner said: “We took advantage of some errors of theirs, they were slipping a lot on the pitch and we’re used to it.”
