Even though training camp can be a grind, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/saskatchewan-roughriders" target="_blank">Saskatchewan Roughriders</a> punter Jon Ryan embraced every second of it.
“There’s definitely more yesterdays than tomorrows in my career, that’s for sure,” said the 39-year-old Ryan. “Having more fun this year than I’ve ever had before and that’s part of it, just knowing there’s not too many of these left.”
The Regina product is entering his second season with his hometown Riders, which will be the 18th professional football season of his career. After playing for the University of Regina Rams, Ryan broke into the CFL in 2004 with the <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/winnipeg-blue-bombers" target="_blank">Winnipeg Blue Bombers</a>, where he also played in 2005.

Then in 2006, the NFL took notice, and he was signed by the Green Bay Packers, where he spent the next two seasons. He then played the next 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, winning a Super Bowl in 2004. He was let go by the Seahawks and attended training camp with the Buffalo Bills in 2019, but didn’t stick on the roster, which led to him coming back to the CFL.
And while Ryan has been known for being a tough and durable punter throughout his career, he insists he&#8217;s in the best shape of his life right now, having spent the last 20 months training in Los Angeles, where he lives during the off-season.
“I was training my butt off,” said Ryan. “I saw it as an opportunity. I had a year and a half to get ready for a season and I worked hard.”
And head coach Craig Dickenson, who doubles as the special teams co-ordinator, has to agree.
“I heard some guys in the locker room saying, ‘Are you sure you’re 39?’” said Dickenson. “He looks ripped.

“That California living has been good to Jon. He’s looking lean and mean.”
In 2019, Ryan set a Roughriders single-season franchise record, averaging 48.8 yards per punt, which was also good enough to earn him CFL West Division all-star honours. And as long as he continues to punt the ball like he can, while having fun doing it, there&#8217;s no telling how many more seasons he will play.
“Certainly no one better out there right now as far as punting the football,” said Dickenson. “If he keeps himself in shape and he keeps himself motivated, then I could see him playing for a few more years that’s for sure.&#8221;
“At this point, you play it one at a time,” said Ryan. “When the fun stops, then I’ll be done. I’ve been very fortunate in my career to play in the NFL for as long as I did that I’m out here for the love of the game because I love playing with these guys, I love this province and being able to play for the team I grew up cheering for, that just means the world to me.
“That’s the reason I’m here and when that’s no longer fun, then it’s going to be over.”

Tim Williams learned the hard way that mistakes can be costly.
While playing football for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in 2016, Williams was pulled over by campus police and subsequently arrested and charged with a misdemeanour for carrying a pistol without a permit. He notified officers he had a gun in the car but didn’t realize he didn’t have the proper permits to carry a firearm.

“Back in Alabama, the laws were different,” Williams said. “In Louisiana, when you purchase a firearm, you don’t need a conceal permit paper to put in your car; your car is an extension of your home in Louisiana.
“It was on me, I made a mistake. That was on me that I didn’t know the rules and regulations.”
And Williams, who was a top NFL prospect heading into the NFL Draft at the time, estimated the error cost him millions of dollars that come with being a high pick.
“The (San Francisco) 49ers told me straight up I was supposed to go the second pick,”  Williams said.
“I lost $20 million, easily.”

Instead, the Baltimore Ravens selected Williams in the third round, 78th overall. He went on to play 20 regular-season games over three NFL seasons with the Ravens, Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, but his career south of the border never really panned out after Alabama. So now, the 27-year-old is trying out for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, using his past as motivation.
“That whole situation really made me change how I view my life,” Williams said. “I’ve got three kids and a wife now so the mentality that I had back then as a 20, 21-year-old coming into the NFL is just totally different.
“I think about that every day. It’s what drives me. It’s what gives me inspiration to keep going.”

<a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">NFL teams</a> have been warned they could forfeit a game due to a <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/covid" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">COVID-19</a> outbreak among non-vaccinated players, and players on both teams wouldn&#8217;t get paid that week.
&#8220;As we learned last year, we can play a full season if we maintain a firm commitment to adhering to our health and safety protocols and to making needed adjustments in response to changing conditions,&#8221; Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday in a memo sent to clubs that was obtained by The Associated Press.
Goodell says the league doesn&#8217;t not anticipate adding a 19th week to accommodate games that can&#8217;t be rescheduled within 18-week regular season.

However, forfeits are among the consequences.
&#8220;If a game can&#8217;t be rescheduled and is canceled due to a COVID outbreak among non-vaccinated players on one of the competing teams, the team with the outbreak will forfeit and will be deemed to have played 16 games for purposes of draft, waiver priority, etc,&#8221; Goodell says in the memo.
For purposes of playoff seeding, the forfeiting team will be credited with a loss and the other team will be credited with a win.
The league says more than half its teams have COVID-19 vaccination rates greater than 80% of their players, and more than 75% of players are in the process of being vaccinated.
Nearly all clubs have vaccinated 100% of their Tier 1 and 2 staffs. Teams have appropriate protocols set up for staffers who have not been vaccinated, consistent with the guidance given last April.

Among the other key points in the memo:
_ If a vaccinated person tests positive and is asymptomatic, he or she will be isolated and contact tracing will promptly occur. The positive individual will be permitted to return to duty after two negative tests at least 24 hours apart, and will thereafter be tested every two weeks or as directed by the medical staffs. Vaccinated individuals will not be subject to quarantine as a result of close contact with an infected person.
_ If an unvaccinated person tests positive, the protocols from 2020 will remain in effect. The person will be isolated for a period of 10 days and will then be permitted to return to duty if asymptomatic. Unvaccinated individuals will continue to be subject to a five-day quarantine period if they have close contact with an infected individual.
_ Anyone who had a previous COVID-19 infection will be considered fully vaccinated 14 days after they have had at least one dose of an approved vaccine.

For the purposes of playoff seeding, the forfeiting team will be credited with a loss and the other team will be credited with a win.

COVID-19 outbreaks among unvaccinated NFL players could lead to forfeited games

In a compact office in Vancouver, Rick Stone and colleagues at Optimal Planning Solutions help solve some of the biggest puzzles in sports, helping put together game schedules for the likes of the <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/nfl" target="_blank">NFL</a> and Major League Baseball.
In the early 2000s, Stone had a vision that he could use his software skills to help sports leagues figure out when and where teams would play. Many leagues at the time were still assembling their schedules by hand or with a spreadsheet.
&#8220;I originally was doing manufacturing scheduling, and so I took the same skills and software that we used in manufacturing scheduling some 20 years ago and just started applying it to sports scheduling,&#8221; Stone said.

Stone says the once the NFL season is over, the league&#8217;s schedule-makers quickly begin work on determining the next season&#8217;s slate of games.
&#8220;With the NFL, at this point, our contribution is really just to support the software. So we&#8217;ve built the software for them.&#8221;

Their software works on a schedule that takes a whole lot of computing power to finalize the league&#8217;s 272-game schedule.
&#8220;There are more combinations of NFL schedules than there are grains of sand on the planet. They&#8217;re running three to four thousand 16-core CPUs 24/7. So they have a warehouse of computers that are solving these schedules every day for four months.&#8221;
One of the things that make setting the NFL schedule so difficult is factoring in the league&#8217;s television partners.

&#8220;The biggest thing that the NFL is after is how do we get the most eyeballs onto our product?&#8221; Stone said.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a limited number of assets, games — 272. So they&#8217;re trying to figure out what are their very, very best games of the 272, the most compelling games, and get them on in the slots that they think that can get the most people watching their games.&#8221;
So how did a little company from B.C. become a teammate for about 30 sports leagues around the world?
Stone got his first sports job by volunteering to put together a schedule for a semi-pro hockey league in the U.S.
&#8220;And it went from there — a lot of word of mouth, a lot of cold calls,&#8221; Stone said.
Eventually he gathered enough knowledge and experience to garner the attention of the NFL.
&#8220;They just happened to be doing a request for proposals to a number of large American consulting companies and said, &#8216;Well, sure, go ahead, throw your name in there.&#8217; And so we did and we ended up winning the bid. We beat the NASAs and the KPMGs and those types of corporations.&#8221;

NBA free agency <a href="https://nba.nbcsports.com/2021/04/14/tyrese-haliburton-i-knew-before-draft-hawks-would-sign-rajon-rondo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unofficially</a> begins before the draft.
Could the league officially open free agency before the draft?
A few years ago, the Rockets <a href="https://nba.nbcsports.com/2018/06/26/report-rockets-propose-nba-starts-free-agency-before-draft/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proposed starting free agency before the draft</a> like the NFL does. The idea gained <a href="https://nba.nbcsports.com/2020/05/29/report-nba-owners-to-discuss-moving-free-agency-ahead-of-draft/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">renewed attention</a> last offseason, as the NBA overhauled its offseason calendar amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The offseason order has remained intact. But apparently, proponents of flipping the draft and free agency have gained traction since Houston raised the issue in 2018.
<a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/should-nba-switch-to-nfl-style-calendar-with-free-agency-before-the-draft-175758595.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports</a>:
<blockquote>A league source told Yahoo Sports about two-thirds of the teams were against it</blockquote>
<blockquote>But quietly, momentum is changing and two general managers told Yahoo Sports they believe it’s a 50-50 split across the league.</blockquote>
<blockquote>One is a strong proponent for it, the other would favor it but wouldn’t fight hard for the change.</blockquote>
<blockquote>The GMs reached by Yahoo Sports didn’t come down to a 50-50 split, they were more in favor of the NFL model by a decent margin.</blockquote>
It&#8217;s often difficult for people to support change unless there&#8217;s a problem with a status quo, and the current system works well enough. Flipping the draft and free agency wouldn&#8217;t be a perfect solution, either.
Sometimes, teams regret draft picks based after seeing how free agency plays out. If the order of events were switched, teams would sometimes regret signings after seeing how the draft plays out.
The NFL comparisons are also overblown. Football players are much more likely to enter the pros ready to contribute, so it&#8217;s more important NFL teams understand their positional needs entering the draft. NBA teams already place too much emphasis on immediate fit when drafting. They don&#8217;t need reason to do it even more.
That said, if the draft were held later, there might be a better-overall allocation of players to teams. Teams would have more flexibility to shape their rosters and trade picks before the draft. Then, picks would be more likely to belong to the teams that actually want to draft in those slot, and they could select their desired player.
But this isn&#8217;t just a theoretical exercise. Delaying the draft would delay summer league and reduce the summer break of team and league employees. That might be the biggest source of resistance – which is reasonable. A slightly better-organized calendar isn&#8217;t worth people in these high-pressure jobs having even less time for family, friends and relaxation. Burnout would be damaging.
Again, the current system works well enough.

Chuba Hubbard is ready to finally know where his pro football career will begin.
For months, the native of Sherwood Park, Alta., has been working out, undergoing testing and conducting numerous virtual interviews in preparation for the 2021 NFL draft. Now, all the Oklahoma State running back can do is wait to hear which team calls his name later this week.

The draft begins Thursday night in Cleveland with teams making their first-round picks. The second and third rounds will be held Friday night, with the remaining four rounds going Saturday.
&#8220;There&#8217;s definitely a bunch of different emotions (heading into draft) but I&#8217;m just ready,&#8221; Hubbard said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
<blockquote>&#8220;I&#8217;m ready to play football, I&#8217;m ready to get this next step going, I&#8217;m ready for this next chapter and to see what&#8217;s going to happen next.&#8221;</blockquote>
The six-foot, 208-pound Hubbard is projected as a third- to fourth-round selection after rushing for 625 yards (4.7-yard average) and five touchdowns last season. After missing two games with a high ankle sprain, Hubbard decided to opt out of the remainder of the 2020 campaign and declare for the draft.

It wasn&#8217;t the ending Hubbard envisioned when he decided to remain in school after leading American university football with 2,094 yards rushing (6.4-yard average) and 21 TDs in 2019. But Hubbard proved earlier this month at Oklahoma State&#8217;s pro day he&#8217;s healthy again, posting an official 40-yard dash time of 4.48 seconds although some social media reports had him running under 4.40 seconds.
Hubbard also registered a 36-inch vertical jump, 4.26-second short shuttle and 20 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com&#8217;s draft guru, has projected Hubbard as a third-day draft selection.
&#8220;I wrote down he&#8217;s kind of a no-nonsense guy when you watch him run,&#8221; Jeremiah said during a pre-draft conference call. &#8220;He runs with a real low pad level.
<blockquote>&#8220;Once he gets the ball in his hands he&#8217;s tough to get down, (he) breaks a lot of tackles.&#8221;</blockquote>
Hubbard is among six Canadians who could be selected this year. That would break the record of four set in 2014.

The other Canadians garnering NFL attention include: Oregon safety Jevon Holland (Coquitlam, B.C.); Tennessee receiver Josh Palmer (Brampton, Ont.), Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (Calgary), Iowa offensive lineman Alaric Jackson (Windsor, Ont.) and Minnesota cornerback Benjamin St-Juste (Montreal).
Holland is expected to be the first Canadian taken, with most projections listing him as a second-round pick. However, some mock drafts have the six-foot, 207-pound junior &#8212; who opted out of the 2020 season to prepare for the draft &#8212; as a late first-round selection.
Holland&#8217;s father, John, was a defensive back in both the NFL (San Francisco 1992-93) and CFL (1990, 1993-97 with B.C., Edmonton and Saskatchewan).

Sherwood Park’s Chuba Hubbard waiting to hear name called at 2021 NFL draft

As <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/covid/" target="_blank">COVID-19</a> cases surge across Canada, thanks in large part to the more contagious variants of concern and a vaccine rollout that has been operating at a snail&#8217;s pace, we are expecting to receive an update as early as Monday from the <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/cfl/" target="_blank">Canadian Football League</a> on the status of its upcoming season.
Word is the league will announce that its 2021 schedule &#8212; slated to kick off on June 10 with the <a href="https://ticats.ca/" target="_blank">Hamilton Tiger-Cats</a> visiting the <a href="https://www.bluebombers.com/" target="_blank">Winnipeg Blue Bombers</a> &#8212; will not start on time.
The latest development comes after the federal government reportedly rejected the CFL&#8217;s latest request for a $30-million interest-free loan. A similar request was sacked by the Trudeau Liberals last year, forcing the 2020 season to be scrapped.

Postponing the start of the 2021 campaign will further hamper the league&#8217;s bottom line and will also reenergize those who support a rumoured merger between the CFL and the XFL.
We know CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie and XFL owners <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/dwayne-johnson/" target="_blank">Dwayne &#8216;The Rock&#8217; Johnson</a>, Dani Garcia and RedBird Capital &#8212; who purchased the league out of bankruptcy for $15 million last year &#8212; have been discussing how they can &#8220;collaborate, innovate, and grow the game of football.&#8221;

Neither side has publicly said their discussions will ultimately result in a merger, and as a fan of the CFL I&#8217;d be against such a move based on the fact that the three-down game has been around for decades while the XFL has managed to play a season and a half in a span of 20 years.
I will admit that the CFL has its warts and many of them are related to the almighty dollar, but while no one is getting rich playing in the league or owning a team, it has stood the test of time.
In saying that, if the CFL and XFL decide to join forces there are certain parts of the Canadian game that should be retained.

A merged league should keep the <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/grey-cup/" target="_blank">Grey Cup</a>. It has been around for more than 100 years and is filled with a century of memories, something that can&#8217;t be said for the XFL championship trophy.
The CFL-XFL should also use three downs instead of the four-down game utilized in the NFL. Yes, football fans south of the border have watched the four-down game for decades at the professional and college level, so why compete with that?
A merged league must offer something different.

To that end, keeping the waggle, the 20-second play clock and 12 players on each side is also a must &#8212; all elements that make the CFL a fast-paced and unique game.
Again, I hope a merger doesn&#8217;t come to be, but as they say &#8216;where there&#8217;s smoke, there&#8217;s fire.&#8221;
At the very least, I hope the CFL can get its financial ducks in a row this year and we can celebrate the return of football in Canada, not to mention the Grey Cup game in Hamilton, in 2021.

The Montreal Alouettes are embracing the possibility of NFL games being played in their city.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the league has set its sights on playing in Canada as part of it expanding its regular season from 16 to 17 games. Starting in 2022, every franchise will play a game internationally at least once every eight years.
On Wednesday, operators of Montreal&#8217;s Olympic Stadium and Vancouver&#8217;s BC Place said in statements that they&#8217;d be interested in exploring opportunities to host NFL games.
The idea of an NFL game being played at Olympic Stadium is fine with the Alouettes, who play their home contests at Molson Stadium.

&#8220;As the sole professional football team in Quebec, we view any major football events in the province as a positive,&#8221; the CFL franchise said in a statement. &#8220;For the past two years, we have felt excitement for our sport during the month of February with the presence of Quebecers in back-to-back Super Bowls.
&#8220;If an NFL game in Montreal allows our fans to watch more football and makes them happy, then we can only rejoice.&#8221;
In 2019, offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a native of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., helped the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl. Tight end Antony Auclair, of Notre-Dame-des-Pins, Que., was on the active roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won this year&#8217;s NFL title.
The NFL says it will focus initially on playing games in Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Europe and South America.

Most of the biggest crowds in CFL history have been at Olympic Stadium, with the league-high being 69,093 for a Montreal Alouettes game in 1977.
As for the B.C. Lions, a team official said the franchise&#8217;s main focus is returning to the field of play in 2021. The CFL cancelled the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Running back <a href="https://www.cfl.ca/players/c-j-gable/158766/" target="_blank">C.J. Gable</a> has announced his retirement from football after signing a one-day contract with the <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/hamilton-tiger-cats/" target="_blank">Hamilton Tiger-Cats</a>.
Gable spent seven years in the <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/cfl/" target="_blank">Canadian Football League</a>, four of them with the Ticats (2013-2017), where he rushed for 2,372 yards and 17 touchdowns in 51 games.
&#8220;C.J.’s abilities to run and catch the football were impressive, but his willingness and execution of blocking made him a complete back,&#8221; said Orlondo Steinauer, head coach of the Tiger-Cats.
&#8220;He dominated at times and was a tremendous competitor who could get those tough yards. We&#8217;re honoured that C.J. has chosen to retire a Ticat and wish him and his family all the best in life as they forge ahead.&#8221;

Gable played for Edmonton from 2017 to 2019 where he amassed 2,431 rushing yards and 11 TDs, including back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in his last two years.
The 33-year-old recorded 243 receptions for 2,225 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns in his career.
He was named an East Division All-Star twice (2013 and 2016) and was a runner-up for the CFL&#8217;s Most Outstanding Rookie Award in 2013.

The Expos were the first MLB franchise based in Canada, where they played for more than three decades before they were relocated to Washington following the 2004 season.
